Ron Adley Great photo John...the Pelagia noctiluca bell is hemispherical and lenghtened; its marginal edge is divided into 16 lappets and carries eight tentacles with four oral arms present beneath the bell. This animal's movements and vertical migrations are affected by light: the pulsations of umbrella increase remarkably as light decreases...
John Paul Connor Many thanks Ron thank you for that clarification
Sara Tome que buena explicacion y que buena foto¡¡
Ron Adley Jellywatch.fr, an independent marine watchdog on the Côte d'Azur, tracks the different sightings of the jellyfish throughout the year and monitors their patterns of movements in order to produce a reliable forecast for swimmers.
Roland Bach In this article missing the main reason why the population of Pelagia noctiluca rises more and more. And the horrible smell comes not from this kind of jellies ( it comes only from the Jelly called velella). Some writers should research before writing an article. Sorry :(
John Paul Connor Roland is right btw my area is overrun with jellyfish there is no smell and now the water is not hot but relatively cool 17 °

Ron Adley Marked rise in mass strandings over the summer along the west coast of Ireland, according to Dr Tom Doyle of University College Cork’s coastal and marine research center, with the mauve stinger (Pelagia noctiluca) being particularly prevalent.
Ron Silver Appears to be a photo of Aurelia aurita not the mauve stinger?
Ron Adley I tend to agree with you Ron...the four pink horseshoe-shaped gonads visible through the bell suggest it is a moon coupled with the differences in bell appearance...the mauve having more pigmentation..I can only assume, for the purposes of this article by the Irish Times, they used a stock picture....
Ron Silver Can't tell you how many times I've seen this happen......even by 'environmental' publications. In this instance, however, the article is about an animal that can cause harm to humans so substituting a photo of a harmless animal really does a great disservice to their readers and the public. Rant over. Thanx!
Ron Adley LOL agreed!!
Ron Adley Let's hope the substance carries this article and not the pic ;-)
Jade Berman Does any one have a picture of a mauve stingers jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) (preferably underwater) which I could use for a document the Ulster Wildlife Trust are producing to explain what we have in the seas around Northern Ireland and how people are connected to the seas?
Rob Smith Are you looking for any location or just from Northern Ireland?
Jade Berman If it is a close up of the jellyfish (eg in the water Column) it could be from anywhere. Thank you for your help
Jade Berman Thanks Rob Smith that looks great and thanks to everyone for responding so quickly very much appreciated! Best fishes
Rob Spray May be late... http://www.1townhouses.co.uk/pelagicpixels/gallery/slides/P5270768web.htm
Jade Berman Beautiful photos Rob Spray thanks for sharing!
Rob Spray Not one of our usual UK archive, this Maltese jelly was polished for a show a few years back. Thanks, glad you like it
John Hepburn Jade,
Will this do? Taken in the Med.
