Ron Adley The Rhizostoma pulmo also known as the barrel and dust-bin lid jelly is moderately venomous, so it is not a strong stinging species; therefore it is commonly considered innocuous and completely harmless to humans.
Found in the northeast Atlantic, and in the Adriatic and Mediterranean Sea. It is also known form the southern Atlantic off the western South African coast and into False Bay.
It is also common in the Irish Sea. This animal typically is up to 40 cm (16 in) in diameter, but can exceptionally reach 90 cm (35 in), making it the largest jellyfish in British waters.
Notwithstanding these "harmless" characteristics, it was indicated to cause burning to fishermen in the Adriatic Sea and in Lebanese waters it frequently caused damage to fishermen and to swimmers who suddenly complained of damage after contact .
MDPI: Mediterranean Jellyfish
