Phycocaris simulans
Kemp, 1916a
Supachai Veerayutthanon Very tiny hairy shrimp, less than 5mm. May be Phycocaris simulans?
f/25 ISO 200, 60 mm with INON wet lens , Inon strobe x 2
Anilao: Philippines:
Colin Lee Jason Isley that's what I thought too. It was tiny as it was, hard to imagine how small it would have been without the eggs. Kudos to the guides that spotted it.
YBhg Ivan Choong Yes it is carrying eggs.
Ken Thongpila Umm, Never see this shrimp before. So that's eggs!!! Nice...

Jun V Lao previously assumed was a hairy shrimp, apparently its an undiscovered shrimp going through famous photog kay burn lim's lembeh stash, any ideas?
Kay Burn Lim Hey hey... what you mean by famous?? :P lol... but seriously, as I know, it is probably from the same family as the hairy shrimp (which is brown... and er.. hairy). But this genus was never identified before... Amazing that it has now been spotted in Anilao too!
Jun V Lao your to modest kay, ok cute photographer hahaha :D we need a champion marine biologist to id :) we name it KBL shrimp since ur first to post worldwide :P
Bob Whorton Famous Dr Bob was the first to photograph this species :p there are currently 5 colour variations
Bob Whorton It was first photographed in 2004 on Makawedi point.
Kay Burn Lim Bob, was that the original brown hairy shrimp?
Jun V Lao ok, we call this shrimp Dr Bob Jr :), for the red variation, Dr Bob 1, & so forth :D, apologies doc to assume/pardon my ignorance
Bob Whorton Yellow, red and brown :)
Bob Whorton There is now ghe green and a pink variety but not seen it yet. Hopefully next month. They are widespread across Asia.
Kay Burn Lim I think I saw a purple one posted too....
Kay Burn Lim THe green one has no hair whatsoever though... unlike the brown/red/yellow varieties
Bob Whorton Like crabs and pipefish - depends on their habitat I think.
Mike Bartick I think tis is called a broken shrimp...or broken back...i now owe you two names...will verify asap
Mike Bartick Can just be Algae shrimp...But is a variation for sure. Local variations differ on habitat. I think i would go with Phycocaris simulans.
Chris Spence Something a little different. Front on view of Algae Shrimp with Eggs.
