Blogie Robillo Fish ID pls? This one was sitting on a sea fan, in about 15m of water. (I think this is the one that preys on pygmy seahorses...)
Lee Goldman Nice photo! Longnose hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus)
Pierz Gwee longnose hawkfish
Carl-Johan Nilsson Amen to that! Not very common.
Shauming Lo Finally after 10 years , Great find Blogie Robillo, show me this one next month.
Blogie Robillo Carl-Johan Nilsson, Shauming Lo - But I see these quite often!
Arne Kuilman Does it really prey on pygmy seahorses? This is an uncommon fish, but can be found everywhere from the Red Sea to Japan. They prefer slightly deeper depths like 15m+
Blogie Robillo Arne Kuilman - That's what I've been told, that they eat pygmies. :)
Arne Kuilman There's no science based evidence for it and they've found pygmy seahorses on the same fans the longnose hawkfish lives on. (info from Richard Smith's website, the pygmy seahorse expert)
Lee Goldman Yeah I'm inclined to agree that they are not exclusive to eating pygmies. For one, at least in Palau we always, always found them on bushes of black coral (antipitharia) and not nearly as often on sea fans. Hawkfish are carnivores (ambush predators) and I always understood these guys to feed on tiny crustaceans in the water column or crawling along the substrate. While they probably would chomp down on a pygmy (if they spot them), I don't believe they are pygmy specialists.
