Aethaloperca rogaa

(Forsskål, 1775)

Nick Hope ID please! From Koh Tachai in the Thailand Andaman Sea. I would say about 40cm long, maybe as much as 50cm. Been puzzling me for a long time. Closest I can think of is a mature Lutjanus sebae, but doesn't seem quite right.

Richard Brooks Hmm good one Nick. I've seen these guys here in Palau a lot and for some reason never ID'd them either but something tells me they are a type of Grouper....

Nick Hope Richard you star! Redmouth grouper, Aethaloperca rogaa. The coloration in the ID books is usually very different, but that's the one. I've got a couple of other clips of it including one with the white bar across the belly. Decade-long mystery solved! :)
