Ron Silver Appears to be a Sea Star Shrimp, Periclimenes soror
KiSang Lee Ron Silver Really?
Ron Silver From Humann & DeLoach Reef Creature ID -Tropical Pacific, page 124, photo in middle right: "A variety of colors often matching sea star hosts; variable markings often with heavy speckled pattern and occasionally a wide stripe down center of back; back profile somewhat flattened making an abrupt downward curve to elongate tail base."
Blogie Robillo Spotted a tiny shrimp apparently living commensally on a crown-of-thorns seastar. Anybody know which species it is? Found it at Talikud Island, Philippines, in about 30ft of water.
Ron Silver Sea Star Shrimp, Periclimenes soror
Arne Kuilman Typical color for Periclimenes soror on crown of thorn.
Evette Swindale I managed to get a photo of one of these in Nuweiba, Egypt on a Crown of Thorns but it was more red due to its hosts colours
Blogie Robillo Oh so they live with a wide variety of starfish, I see. Thanks Ron!
Evette Swindale They also live on sea cucumbers
Arne Kuilman Easy to find in blue on blue Linckia seastars all over South-East Asia. (usually on the bottom underneath it's legs)
Blogie Robillo That's right, Arne, I often see them on those stars.
Blogie Robillo Whenever I see this shrimp, it's always on an azure sea star, and always in shallow waters (around 15m). It was less than a centimeter long, I guess. ID pls?
Jun V Lao imperial or emperor, same same but different lol
Blogie Robillo Yeah its general body shape is the same as the emperor's, I guess, but the colors --or lack of them-- are all wrong...
Ilan Ben TovPericlimenes Soror
Blogie Robillo Thanks Ilan! Will look that up :)
Ilan Ben Tov Its common name is starfish shrimp and its colors varies according to the host starfish.
