Keith Hiscock The coral looks much more likely the scarlet and gold star coral Balanophyllia regia - lives in shallowish waters often at the ends of surge gullies. Where and what depth?

Sue Daly It lives on cup corals - I've seen it on Devonshire cup corals and Leptopsammia. Sometimes there are four or five on one individual but the coral appears to be fine.
