Irus irus

(Linnaeus, 1758)

David Fenwick Snr Here's the live Irus irus from Carnsew Pool, 07.04.13. I also recently came across a single valve of Irus irus in shell sand from Long Rock, Penzance, 30.03.13. SW 49845 30915.

Andy Horton I did not know of this venerid.

David Fenwick Snr I don't find it often, usually a couple times a year, twice already this year. One of my favorite molluscs. Someone will have to do a PhD on how it got into Carnsew Pool! It's basically a fully saline sluicing pool with a very narrow tunnelled entrance. Hoping to find a nice colony of Atrina in there when the weather warms up.

Simon Taylor Thanks David - excellent photograph as usual.

Erling Svensen These tiny (1 cm long) mussels, may it be the Mytilus edulis - juvenil one?

Steve Wilkinson And looks like Irus irus over on the right (pinky siphons)

Erling Svensen I do think the one over to the right is Hiatella arctica - "stoneboringmussel" in Norwegian.

Erling Svensen There is also one in the centre of the picture.

David Fenwick Snr Pleased to report the finding of a live, 6mm specimen of Irus irus, Rock venus from Carnsew Pool, Hayle, Cornwall. 07.04.13. SW 55483 37482. Was in a sample of shell-sand collected and sifted in-situ. First live one I've come across and I don't come across dead ones all that often.

Simon Taylor Hello David. A very interesting find of what can be quite an elusive species. Would be great to see an image of the specimen...
