Madrella aurantiaca

Vayssière, 1902

Mickey Charteris Greeting fellow nudi-lovers. Anyone out there able to put an ID on this one, even a genus? Only been spotted on sandy slopes, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras. Note the white cross between the rhinophores. Thanks

Jacqueline Freeman WoW! Beautiful!

João Pedro Silva Madrella sp.

Vinicius Padula Madrella sp. - There is no Madrella described from the W.Atlantic and much probably this is an undescribed species.

Mickey Charteris Thanks, actually taken by my friend Rino Jackson, his find.

João Pedro Silva This is quite a find. Which bryozoans did you find around it (if any...)?

Mickey Charteris Can't find it ID's anywhere, so yes we were thinking a new species, anyone seen anything like it before in W Atlantic?

Mickey Charteris Are they commensal with bryozoans? Don't know.

Vinicius Padula A few months ago we received photos also from Honduras. Would be good if you can collect 2-3 specimens for study.

Mickey Charteris If Rino finds another one, where can it be sent to be described?

João Pedro Silva From the Atlantic I only know of Madrella aurantiaca... but that's E Atlantic and Mediterranean... and even then, rare. Madrella aurantiaca apparently feeds on Pentapora foliacea inside which it spends most of the time.

Mickey Charteris Will be on the lookout, thanks. Where to send them?

Vinicius Padula I will send you a message.

Mickey Charteris Cheers, Vinicius. Joao, we don't get Pentapora foliacea here, I think, but will look closer into similar Bryozoans now.

Carol D Cox I hope I will see some when I visit Roatan in December!

Gary Cobb Question! Does anyone know if in fact Madrella aurantiaca Vayssière, 1902 is a synonym of Madrella sanguinea (Angas, 1864)? Thanks in advance!

João Pedro Silva Tomorrow I'm going to check some photos here in Portugal which just might be Madrella.

João Pedro Silva Just waiting for the confirmation from Gonçalo Calado and Lucas Cervera...

Gary Cobb Thank you Joao! Look forward to the reply.

João Pedro Silva Confirmed :) Madrella aurantiaca here in Portugal.

Gary Cobb Thank very much Joao for the check! I will email you my 'missing photos' list from the App.

João Pedro Silva On the next dives I'll be carefully inspecting the large colonies of Pentapora fascialis (=P. foliacea).

Gary Cobb Wish I could join you!

João Pedro Silva Plenty of time for you to get here, Gary :) I think I'll only be diving on thursday.

João Pedro Silva A few dives later... no luck finding it again. :(

Gary Cobb You have to treat them like gold...it's where you find them!
