Anthony Hurd Hi, this was washed up yesterday at North Bay, Scarborough; recent heavy seas have seen lots of deceased crustaceans, molluscs and auks washing up. Is this the common squid - Loligo vulgaris? Any information will be great. Thanks in advance.

David Hill Wow - what a find.

Paula Lightfoot I saw some on the strandline at Spurn a couple of months back but I assumed they'd been left by anglers who'd been using them as bait rather than washed up by tide as there were three together quite high up (and there were anglers at other points along the beach). Not sure though, they could have been washed up as I have seen the eggs while diving so they must be around!

Andy Horton This note summarizes information on the biology of squids in UK waters, their distribution, capture and economic importance. Advice is given on the handling and processing of squid, its chilled and frozen storage life, and on the composition and yield of edible flesh. Much of the information also applies to species of squid imported from other parts of the world. http://www.fao.org/wairdocs/tan/x5948e/x5948e01.htm
