Algarvia alba

Garcia-Gomez & Cervera, 1989

João Pedro Silva I think I forgot to share this in this group. This is the only photo of a live specimen of Algarvia alba, shot for the first time last month by Manex Cantalapiedra in Donostia - San Sebastián, Spain. The species was described from two individuals collected (but not photographed) near Sagres, Algarve, Portugal, 25 years ago.

João Pedro Silva I've just found this photo on Flickr by "Manex Cantalapiedra". I've already asked for a location but... bite me if this doesn't look like Algarvia alba.

João Pedro Silva Gonçalo Calado is at the airport boarding but he's seen the photo and confirmed. This is the first photo of a live specimen of this species: Algarvia alba.

João Pedro Silva Surprise: shot in... the north of Spain (Getaria, Guipúzcoa, Basque Country)!

Lucas CerCur Yes, this is Algarvia alba.

Lucas CerCur After 24 years to be described .....surprise!!! It arises again.

Lucas CerCur The species was described on the basis of 2 small individuals from Sagres (Algarve, S Portugal).

Lucas CerCur My original draw represents exactly the species.

John Sexton size, when we foto taken,

João Pedro Silva 5mm long

John Sexton And was the foto just taken? This might give us a time frame every year to start looking for others.

João Pedro Silva It was posted on Flickr on the 20th, not sure of the exact date taken. I only detected it yesterday evening.

John Sexton It would be very nice to find out. And what the surrounding fauna was for aiding in searching...

João Pedro Silva Manex knows the precise stone it was on so it'll be easy to know more data.

João Pedro Silva Confirmed it was shot on the 20th of July :)

Gonçalo Calado We should go there ASAP, with the help Manex

João Pedro Silva I have to be here in Lisbon until thursday evening at least.

Gonçalo Calado 900 km from Lisbon...

João Pedro Silva First shot of a live specimen of Algarvia alba by Manex Foto, 24 years after the first and only sighting in Sagres, Algarve Portugal, not seen in the Basque Country, Spain. This photo is history in the making :)

Gary Cobb Wonderful to see this beautiful species in the flesh!

João Pedro Silva Here it is, the 1st Nudibranch Safari in Portugal! From the 29th of June to the 4th of July, 4 days of diving, Nitrox 32 included. And a full refund to the first who finds Algarvia alba!

João Pedro Silva Water temp. is about 19ºC right now but it should raise a bit in the next two weeks.

Sarah Bowen Oh to have the summer off to dive our way around the world! Would absolutely love to join you, but have a job to try and keep and not enough holiday to do everything I would like to.

João Pedro Silva It's only 6 days including the weekend :)

Sarah Bowen Stop the torment; please? But we'll just be back from the Galapagos ....

João Pedro Silva You're going across the ocean(s) to the Galapagos and feel tormented with a short trip to the Algarve?

Nadia Chiesi GREAT IDEA ! :-))

João Pedro Silva This is the first Nudibranch Safari for Portugal but it's been going for years in Norway. I think we need to make a circuit :)

Nadia Chiesi Yes .... , I hope one day ... in Italy ... !!! :-)))

João Pedro Silva Unfortunately, we had to cancel this due to lack of participants. There were several interested but unable to attend at these dates. We will surely organize other(s) in the (near) future, so stay tune! :)

João Pedro Silva We'll go through some of the most nudibranch diverse spots in the Algarve. Although most species are more active in May/June, we're still having lots sightings per dive (20 different species on average).

João Pedro Silva Following Christian Skauge's idea of Nudibranch Safaris, myself and Gonçalo Calado thought about setting up a Portuguese version in the Algarve. We think it could happen as soon as June 2012. We're still trying to figure out which would be the more adequate model (liveaboard, hotel, duration, etc) so we would like to read your opinions and possible interest. I hope Robert Eriksson likes the idea of getting some "Nudi-Nerd" t-shirts :)

Robert Eriksson Nudi-Nerds T-shirt - cool idea! I know that 4th element has a t-shirt of similar fashion, but hey, let's do our own and show the world how we like it in the nudi. (swedish west coats humour)

Robert Eriksson Algarve is a plan, but say september instead. I vote for Sagres daytrips accomodation on hotel/hostel!

David Kipling Nude-ist ;)

David Kipling Now why does that not come as a surprise ;) [Well apart from the fact that I've seen him wearing it at Emily Priestley's house!].

David Kipling João, what is the peak time for nudis in Portugal? In the UK it seems to be early in the diving season for most species (April,May,June) to coincide with various food sources blooming. Come September the numbers and variety have generally dwindled. How is it with you?

Bernard Picton I think some species, Doto and Hancockia spring to mind, are sometimes most abundant late in the year.

Gonçalo Calado The peak of diversity is in June

João Pedro Silva No doubt the best time would be June. There are very few species which cannot be found in June. We may get to find the elusive Algarvia alba :) http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=139904

Bernard Picton How about making it family friendly and in the school holidays? Rent a big villa and only allow people with well-behaved children like ours...;-)

Gonçalo Calado July-August is peak season in the Algarve. If you're really interested, please book in advance. We'll try to do the more convenient to all interested

João Pedro Silva Bernard, when will the school holidays start? As to "family friendliness" there are lots of things to do besides going underwater and looking for slugs. Lots of white sand beaches, lots of places to look for other interesting animals (for instance, chameleons can be found in some places), lots of nice restaurants... and a few pubs for the grown ups to have a pint in the evening :)

Christian Skauge I have four different nudi t-shirts and will try to come down and show them off :-)

João Pedro Silva (note: organize a fashion show during the nudibranch safari)

Christian Skauge haha great idea! If I'm able to make it, I'd be happy to give a talk about nudi photography - if there's any need/interest :-)

João Pedro Silva That would be great, Christian!

Bernard Picton We've been out there for two two-week stays with friends, who are also Gonçalo's friends. So I've done a couple of dives at Sagres and would be keen to do more. I've even got a nice photo of a Chameleon on my arm! I do find that mixing a diving holiday with the family one is difficult, but if there were several wives and children it could work really well.

Christian Skauge Looks good... I can get a return ticket from Oslo to Lisbon for just over €300 in June ;-)

João Pedro Silva Christian, have you looked for flights directly to Faro? It's quite a bit from Lisbon to the Algarve. Unless you're planning on also visiting Lisbon.

Bernard Picton You don't *need* one Dawn, you can share mine. Don't be so sensitive, I meant partners, I'm just too old to be PC.

Bernard Picton OK, I see what you're getting at! I didn't mean they were a requirement, I just know some kids can be annoying and I was trying to say ours would be fun. Actually they would both want to join in, I had them diving in Banyuls-sur-Mer in 2010. and they like snorkelling.

Christian Skauge @João: Wow, even better! I can get that in June for €275 :-)

João Pedro Silva It all depends on how many stops you're willing to take. But I think it won't get much better than that :)

Christian Skauge That's a direct flight, and I can't find anything cheaper so this looks very good!

João Pedro Silva For a direct flight that's a really good price!

João Pedro Silva We're starting to sort out the logistics of the event :)
