Odobenus rosmarus

(Linnaeus, 1758)

Erling Svensen Sometimes I am not proud to be a norwegian. The autorities decided to kill this walrus just by looking some few seconds. Specialist were not contacted as the walrus normaly do not swim so far South. But divers and concervationists say this was not nessesary as the conditions were good and it look healthy. Nils Aukan, a friend, underwaterphotografer and cop on pension, has reviewed the people that killed it. The walrus have been under protection since 1952. Bernard Picton Given Norway's attitude to whaling, I can't say I'm surprised. Clearly there are a lot of people in the fishing industry who think they are still living in 1800...

Andy Horton cf. Walrus April 1999 A Walrus, Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus was seen hauled out on rocks in County Mayo, Ireland for six hours. Lying within 100 metres of the busy coastal road and spotted as a "rock that moved", the resting walrus finally disappeared at dusk. There have been several walrus sightings at sea off County Donegal in recent winters, and a couple of walruses were reported to have been seen by surfers in Killala Bay in December. A dead walrus was found in County Kerry in January 1995. The Walrus is an Arctic species and is rarely seen even off Scotland and the Shetland Isles.
