Ron AdleyPeriphylla periphylla is found in every ocean of the world apart from the Arctic, at 1,000 to 7,000 meters deep. Light is toxic to this jellyfish and it only moves up to shallower depths at night...Like many jellyfish the crown or helmet jelly has large stinging cells on its tentacles that it uses to attack prey. It is unusual because it can produce flashes of light by a chemical reaction called bioluminescence that helps protect it from predators.
Jan Roar Gjersvold My video of Periphylla periphylla. The video is tanken in Norway at Sakrnsundbridge. HD 1080p

Elly Jeurissen Really beautiful. This jellyfish looks like a flower when it is moving.... Never seen one like this :-)
Jan Roar Gjersvold agree with you and this is one of my favorite species, it is just amazing :)
Jan Roar Gjersvold The best known species in Norway is crown jellyfish (Periphylla periphylla) This species lives in deep waters worldwide. In some Norwegian fjords, deep water is pressed against the surface, and then it is possible for divers to observe this jellyfish. Famous places are Lurefjord at Bergen, and Skarnsundet in Trondheim Fjord. Crown jellyfish are becoming more numerous in the Norwegian fjords in recent years, while the diversity of fish has been reduced. The cause is not known but it is believed that the jellyfish under certain conditions outperform fish.
Elly Jeurissen Interesting background information, Jan. Thanks! Diving in Norway seems wonderful to me. If it only weren't so cold, brrrr :-D
Jan Roar Gjersvold shown to dress properly, it is not so cold for diving in Norway, I promise you that diving in Norway is amazing, you must consider a trip over here ;)
Elly Jeurissen Hmmm, I'm still not into drysuit diving, but who knows. Never say never..... ;-)
And than there is my partner / buddy who just hates cold (water) temperatures. I would have to visit Norway alone, I'm afraid, hahaha :-D
Jan Roar Gjersvold realize the cold water can be a hindrance when you're used to tropical water. This is one choice that must be taken, if you choose to try, you will experience the amazing underwater scenery we have in this country ;)
