Claudia Weber-Gebert question: is this a blenny or a gobi???
El Hierro - Canary Islands
Canon G10
John Paul Connor Interactif Yes Blennie pour moi
Claudia Weber-Gebert I also think it is a blenny - but not shure .....
Marie-therese Bertin qu"il est bio!!!
Stuart Pearce Looks like Combtooth blenny (
Scartella cristata) :)
TC Alp Baranok In my opinion it's a blenny.
Stuart Pearce Beautiful shot :)
Claudia Weber-Gebert Thank you - ok, then I can give it a name ;) :D
Stuart Pearce Common name Molly Miller Blenny :)
Cameron Easton The tentacles - "cirri"- above or between the eyes are the key feature in defining it as a blenny rather than a goby. Stuart - I have no experience of Canary Islands fauna, so I'll bow to your better knowledge of the Mediterranean and it's environs. I had thought that the pattern round the eye body pattern and tufted cirri looked a bit like images of Morocco Blenny
Parablennius parvicornis ...?
Claudia Weber-Gebert Morocco is nearer to El Hierro than the med... ;)
Claudia Weber-Gebert Blenny
Parablennius parvicornis - "rock pool blenny" ...that would fit - I took the pic in a rock pool :D

Michael Lodise Blenny have antenna is how I figure it out...
Stuart Pearce I have no key to Med fish Cameron, can only go off internet images :) Both are Combtooth blenny species, both are found around the Canary islands. I thought the patterns and tufted cirri looked more like the images I was getting for the Molly Miller, I will post the images in a min, just a personal judgement, and also lots of websites have bad ID's on them. Would need someone with a species key for that area to get a definite ID :) I looked at the cheek area and eye patterns of both, from the pictures I am getting still think Molly Miller, but without a key for the area, often get them wrong LOL :D

Stuart Pearce Had time for a better look now, the lack of a longer strip of tufted cirri just behind the 2 smaller tufts does mean it is probably P. Parvicornis, well spotted Cameron :)
Tom Hobock Really well Shot
Cameron Easton Mmm! Would like to say "aam the man" ... BUT I only have a minimalist Debelius for the Atlantic/Mediterranean - otherwise it's web images- few of which are any use. Nice that you've found a decent
Cameron Easton .... Continued!!
Cameron Easton reference image Stuart ... As you say, most web images are pretty poor for our ID purposes. So, what do you think for Claudia ...?
Stuart Pearce Yes would now go with P. parvicornis, but the Molly Miller is also found in rockpools around the Canary Islands, so need to check them tufts on future shots LOL :D Fishbase is a very good site for ID purposes :)
Claudia Weber-Gebert oh, I'm not a specialist for blennies ;)...there were 2 sorts of blennies in the rockpools - perhaps one is Molly Miller and the other one is P. Parvicornis ???
Claudia Weber-Gebert this was the smaller one of them: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10202129513629926&set=a.10202121974041441.1073741834.1550718500&type=3&theater
Stuart Pearce Still P. parvicornis I think, cannot see a row of tufted cirri behind the 2 smaller tufts :)
