Erling Svensen Some pictures from todays dive. On the pictures,
Marthasterias glacialis,
Psammechinus miliaris and Ophiocomina nigra.
Bernard Picton I like the pedicellariae. I've been taking some close-up photos of Echinoderms myself as those features are used in identification.
Dave Skingsley Some echinoderms from the Isle of Cumbrae - and a squat lobster that I only noticed once I looked at the picture on the big screen (not an uncommon experience when using macro lenses in the wild.
Asterias rubens,
Psammechinus miliaris and probably Galathea squamifera
Andy Horton Psammechinus miliaris : just checking my spelling ???
Andy Horton It is uncommon intertidally off Sussex. http://www.marlin.ac.uk/speciesfullreview.php?speciesID=4216 Found in the colder months. February is likely to be best.
David Wilson These furrowed crabs( Xanthos incisus?) were found under rocks at a small cove in Torbay. In previous years they have been scarce here but this year there are very abundant. In contrast, the previously abundant purple urchins were completely missing.
Sharon Williams I found a purple urchin in the strandline at Warkworth in Northumberland - dead unfortunately.
Andy Horton The
Psammechinus miliaris urchins do not like the warmth of summer and will not survive intertidal in the warmer months.
David Wilson I have found urchins in their hundreds in previous Augusts on this very shore. Perhaps, after the heatwave in July, the water is warmer than usual.
David Wilson By the way, are these X incisus, I'm not that familiar with furrowed crabs?
David Wilson I feel a bit foolish now, they were green sea urchins not purple.
