Chris Wood Have you seen a crawfish?
Crawfish, crayfish, spiny lobster, Palinurus elephas - populations have plumetted in the last 20 years or so as a result of tangle netting and diver collection and they are now rare enough to be on the Biodiversity Action Plan list, and there have been moves to give them total protection under the Wildlife and Countyside Act.
Seasearch has undertaken surveys of historic populations in Wales, using diver records and last year ran a survey of numbers and habitat in North Pemborkeshire. We also have an online recording option available to anybody who sees a crawfish on their dives. If you are completing a Seasearch form them put it on there but if not then do contribute to the online records. Photos are great too.
Most of the few records we get come from Ireland, but there are also recent sightings in the Channel Islands, Devon and Cornwall, West Wales and the west coast of Scotland. On easterly coasts the most southerly records are from the Farne Islands (2007) and St Abbs (2009).
Chris Barrett Haven't there been some of these at Mackenzie Pier, Holyhead?
Chris Barrett I might be wrong, but I do remember seeing a very small wolf fish there
Chris Wood I would be very surprised to see crawfish in a harbour. They are creatures of rocky reefs and often around the 20m mark. As for wolf fish they are very much a northern species and are only regularly encountered of north-east coasts, usually in Scotland.
Chris Barrett Perhaps I got it wrong about the crawfish then. Martin Sampson would probably be able to confirm this though, as he has dived there many times. The wolf fish must have only been about 10cm in length, although it's hard to say, as I only saw it's head
Andy Horton Gill nets are often thought to be sustainable, but what do fishermen do to the valueless crabs stuck in the netting?
Keith Rd Some guys on our boat last week saw a spiny lobster I think. We were on a wreck in the Scilly Isles
Keith Rd They got video I believe
Chris Wood Keith. Can you let us have details please? Either online via the Recording page of the Seasearch website or by email We would like to know who saw it, when and where and the depth and habitat it was in. Thanks.
Liz Morris I crawfish spotted in North Wales today by Bernd and Tom. Records will follow on forms (I hope!). Do you want records separate to normal forms?
Chris Barrett Possibly could be some at Mackenzie pier then! Have you had any other records of Wolf fish, Liz?
Liz Morris Are you sure youre not confusing them with squat lobsters Chris barrett? Like Chris wood said, they are generally deeper rocky reef species,Often in tidally swept env. I don't think they'd last long on Mckenzie if they were there!! Never had a wolf fish record here on my duty, nearest was the isle if man. I don't think such a small records can be added without a photo if you're not sure, sorry Chris!
Chris Barrett Quite possibly - I don't think I've seen one - only going off what I'd heard. I definitely saw a wolf fish there though, although I understand that it's a problem without a photo. Hope you're well, Liz :)
Chris Wood Liz - If recorded on a Seasearch Form no need for a separate crawfish record online - they are for where people are not filling in an Obs or Survey Form. First one seen in North Wales for some while. Is there a picture?
Wendy Northway yes there is Chris - go to the North Wales facebook page. I think it was Bernd who snapped it.
