Periclimenes sagittifer
(Norman, 1861)
Chris Wood We have just had the first record of the anemone prawn Periclimenes sagittifer from mainland Britain this year. This is the little prawn that lives in snakelocks anemones and is present all year in the Channel Islands. It first turned up at Swanage Pier in 2007 and last year was recorded as far west as Babbacombe in Devon. This year's record is from Selsey in Sussex and is the first time it has been seen anywhere east of Swanage so is a significant one.
We would like divers to do some serious spotting in shallow sites along the south coast of England to see if there are others around this year. October was when they first appeared and this may be something to do with the breeding cycle so now is the time to look.
You'll need to look carefully - as the size ofthe tentacles shows, this is a tiny, but distinctive, prawn.
Becky Hitchin Rachel Coppock Weston, here's a good climate change thing to test!!
João Pedro Silva They're quite common here in Portugal but I've found it's easier to spot and photograph during the night. They come out a lot more.
Chris Wood Thats a good tip. They are usually in easily shore dived places and the nights are darwing in!
Chris Wood It's spot the shrimp time in the south
Seasearch divers first reported the anemone shrimp (or prawn - you decide) Periclimenes sagittifer on the north side of the English Channel in 2007 and there have been records since from Selsey in the east to Babbacombe in the west. Most of the records are made in the autumn and this year we have had recent sightings in Balaclava Bay, Portland (photo below by James Lucey).
So now is the time to start looking closely at your snakelocks anemones - we'd like to continue to record where this new species to English waters is turning up. Do let us know if you see them.
Kirstie Harris We'll be looking out for them at Shoalstone on Saturday
Charlotte Bolton We've had the first sighting of the year in Chesil Cove just last week... I'm still searching!
