Crangon allmanni
Kinahan, 1860c
David Fenwick Snr Can someone have a look at the images please and tell me what they think. Have looked at it under the scope and I think almost certainly Crangon allmanni judging by the sixth telson. Was found intertidally at Chimney Rocks, Penzance, today.
David Fenwick Snr Marco contacted me privately as he was worried about it being Crangon allmanni. Fortunately I had saved the specimen and had put it in alcohol. I looked at the specimen again, drew it on paper with the book in another room, then took the drawing to the book, it was soon apparent that it wasn't Crangon allmanni at all, but Hippolyte varians, a species I thought I was familiar with. Just goes to show how important it is to consider 'everything' when looking at prawns, masters of mimicry. A lesson learnt!
