Galathea balssi

Miyake & Baba, 1964

Erik K F Goossens Anilao, Philippines, 8m, Size approx 1.5 cm (less than an Inch) I Guess this is some kind of Squat Lobster - Galathea sp xx : I haven't found any details on the exact(er) name of this little critter. It was sitting on a great barrel sponge, may be in symbiosis with a familiy of hairy squat lobster... (I have no clue, may be it IS some form of 'non-hairy' version of the hairy one.... Any suggestions on it's ID are appreciated...

Arne Kuilman There are no nicer Latin names. These are all called Galathea balssi after the Russian (?) biologist who made a study of them tens of years ago. Ever since balssi not many people have studied Galathidae… 󾍀

Erik K F Goossens Txs Arne !

Kati Burg Tiny squat lobster next to Phenacovolva rehderi (?), at 15m, Romblon Island, Philippines. ID(s) please :-)

Blogie Robillo WOWOWOW!!!

Blogie Robillo I think you got the mollusk's ID right, but I'm not sure about the squat lobster...

Arne Kuilman These squat lobsters need capturing and identification by specific features. In this case when you're not sure the most common normal featured (brown) squat lobster is Galathea balssi. That's what I call these unless they start having striped or more color or a special feature. You can also say: Galathea sp. meaning Family of the squat lobsters, but not sure which one.
