David Ennew julian rocks 13/4. 6m any idea of the species .Chromodoris maybe ?
Ashley MissenGlossodoris atromarginata - Nice find - quite common at julian rocks and you can find them all year round there
David Ennew well thats what i thought from Garys app but the outlines in the photo from garys app are black and this one has blue outlines
Ashley Missen The App is Great for ID'ing but you should really use nudibase.com as you will see more photos of the one species and you can search by dive site. All cameras photos come out slightly different so it makes it hard to ID by just one Photo - Cheers Ash
Gary Cobb The only way to tell the true colour of the margin is to take it out of the water and look at it in true light! Ash, the website is great but you need a web connection to see it unlike the Apps which can be viewed ANYWHERE ANYTIME:) one more thing...margin coloration variations will always try to fool you! Get an expert to ID the photos!!!
Gary Cobb Sorry but the photo here has black rhinophores and black margin that looks like the same colour. This is Glossodoris atromarginata without question.
David Ennew the expert has spoken
Jeff Rosenfeld Gary, don't know if you've had a chance to see Rebecca Johnson and Terry Gosliner's new paper, but apparently Glossodoris atromarginata is now ‘Doriprismatica’ atromarginata. See http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0033479 and specifically http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchSingleRepresentation.action?uri=info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0033479.s002 for the new names.
Blogie Robillo Jeff - Does that go for all Glossodoris species??
Jeff Rosenfeld No Blogie, not all. Some stayed Glossodoris while a number of others changed. http://www.plosone.org/article/fetchSingleRepresentation.action?uri=info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0033479.s002 lists all the species they studied and whether or not their names changed. (If a particular species isn't listed in this document, it means they didn't study it and therefore it remains the same.)
Blogie Robillo Thanks Jeff!
Gary Cobb Thanks Jeff for the info!! I have the paper but have not read it yet, been diving and working on the App. Will have a read:)
Gary Cobb I wonder if this study has been accepted BY THE WORLD?
David Ennew glad to encourage discussion folks .my work is done ,now everyone get off the puter box and go find some nudis
Gary Cobb Forget finding them!! We gotta rename them all!! Sssssssssss
David Ennew well my learned friend ,you go for it .I have nothing but encouragement to offer you .
Tini Palar Lindz Warren Thank you for the information
Lindz Warren pleasure.
Karen Rochester Hi Lindz Warren, I always thought this was a Glossodoris atromarginata - (also Cuvier, 1804)
http://www.nudipixel.net/species/glossodoris_atromarginata/
is there a difference or is there some variation in the name??
Sven Kahlbrock Karen, you are right, it was G. artromarginata, but the whole group was renamed.
Karen Rochester Really? Thanks for letting me know Sven Kahlbrock! When was this please?
Lindz Warren in 2012: Johnson R.F. & Gosliner T.M. (2012) Traditional taxonomic groupings mask evolutionary history: A molecular phylogeny and new classification of the chromodorid nudibranchs. PLoS ONE 7(4): e33479., available online at http://www.plosone.org/article /info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0033479
Sven Kahlbrock Thank´s Lindz, just wanted to post that too ;-)

Yutaka Takizawa Very nice shot....(^。^)
Ron SilverGlossodoris sibogae
Patricia Perret I think that it is Glossodoris atromarginata Ron Silver
Ron Silver Deep yellowish/brown body color is indicative of G. sibogae while light yellow to tan body is indicative of G. atromarginata.
Ron Silver Patricia, Here's a photo of G. atromarginata: http://www.seaslugforum.net/find/glosatro
Patricia Perret This picture is a little bit overexposed so te white margin close to the black one is difficult to see well. The gills are very black http://www.nudipixel.net/species/glossodoris_atromarginata/
Patrik Good Just to reconfirm - this is Glossodoris atromarginata and Phyllidia elegans (never sure with the Phyllidias)? Old Woman Island, 25/10/2010, size Phyllidia 60mm. Does that seem right. No picture of the underside. Rhinopores are yellow.
Gary Cobb You're right!
Patrik Good Thank you, Gary (and Alex for the like). A little step in my quest to getting my stats in order. I think there is a research paper out there that about the Phyllidias. Is it any good and easy to digest for amateurs?
