Cadlina pellucida

(Risso, 1826)

Chris Wood First UK sighting for a southerly nudibranch? This rather distinctive nudibranch with black rhinophores and gills was recorded at Hilsea Point Devon and has been identified by Bernard Picton as Cadlina pellucida. Bernard says "Currently known from Portugal and NW Spain, but certainly never on our side of the English Channel. Is it another one moving North?" One to look out for then - this one was spotted by Allen Murray and the photo is from Alec Jacobs The Holothuria poo gives it a nice bit of scale!

Ian Smith Second. David Kipling posted one last year on NE Atlantic Nudibranch group.

Paula Lightfoot Yes - couldn't be added to Marine Recorder as still not in the species dictionary :( But will be soon.

Paula Lightfoot David's was from the Lizard in Cornwall.

Sarah Bowen We saw one last year too, on the Porcupine trip in Cornwall! So definitely another one on the move.

Terry Griffiths Trapanina macculata I managed too see 5 of these today about 6m depth.

Dan Bolt Great find T! Shoalstone?

Terry Griffiths No we did Babbs along the gardens.

João Pedro Silva Only seen it once here in Portugal and it was the first time it was seen here. Tomorrow I'll be on the look out.

Kirstie Harris I think I need to look at the yellow and white chaps more closely!

Bernard Picton Great find Terry! There are very few records of this from the UK and I think you probably saw more than all previous sightings put together. With the Cadlina pellucida turning up as well perhaps the Plymouth area is going to see a lot of new immigrants this year?

Richard Yorke Could they be just under reported? I am just adding 2 from the Dorset coast, One in 2010 and the other 2012

Bernard Picton Yes, Richard, we must remember that white with yellow processes must be a signal to mean "don't eat me" for the fish. So unrelated animals are using the same colour pattern. Look closely at the arrangement of the processes.

Terry Griffiths Been going through my old photo's i have photographs of them going back 8 years .

Terry Griffiths No one of mine just looking to confirm species thanks

João Pedro Silva Cadlina pellucida

Sarah Bowen Oooh, where was this taken? There's only one UK record so far of this; it's a more Southern species usually.

Terry Griffiths Thats why i was a bit unsure a bout this one it was around Hislea which is Plymouth area Sally Sharrock asked me too look at it passed all info back to her now.

João Pedro Silva Very common here in Portugal: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jpsilva1971/8513045473/

Dan Bolt Utterly amazed to see this Mediterranean species in south Devon (UK) today. I think it is Hermaea variopicta? I've seen it once before, just 20m from today's sighting but back in September 2008. Have a good weekend everyone :-)

Ian Smith Great find. It matches the description and illustration in Schmekel & Portmann "Opisthobranchia des Mittelmeeres" closely.

João Pedro Silva Yes, it's Hermaea variopicta. Although hard to see, it's also found along the coast of mainland Portugal.

Dan Bolt Thank you both for the confirmation :)

Sarah Bowen Wow - there certainly seem to be more and more non-natives turning up on the South Coast, don't there. I wonder if we should start to log these unusual sightings more systematically, and if so, where? Conch Soc perhaps? See further down for posts about Cadlina pellucida which turned up on the Manacles in September too!

Dan Bolt I always fill in a SeaSearch form for any weird stuff I see, they are building an awesome database of info for the whole of the UK

Sarah Bowen Yes, me and David Kipling are keen Seasearchers too! These 'weird' ones don't always make it onto Marine Recorder straight away because they're not yet on the UK databases. That's what makes it so exciting.

Ian Smith Hi Sarah Bowen the Conch Soc is very keen to have the southern arrivals on its on-line Encyclopedia so descriptions and images are available for recorders. I'm approaching finders of new species to ask permission for use of their photos when I am ready to tackle the relevant account- I don't want to ask and then keep them waiting. It is not always plain sailing - I've been trying to sort out one sp. for 4 months but seem to have run into the sand. I'm keeping note of relevant postings so I can approach folk. I've had very generous responses from those whom I've asked, and am very grateful, but I realise that some folk may not want their images used, especially if they have their own website. I hope I won't cause embarrassment to anyone by asking. Cheers Ian (editor of sea slug section of Conch soc Encyclopedia, and starting on the Cephalopods - have a look at the Sepia account using Joao's wonderful images, not quite finished yet)

Carissa Shipman Stunning!

Bettina Balnis what a beautiful nudi

Bernard Picton Great photo, Dan. This species has been found on a few occasions in SW England before, and we got it in SE Ireland once.

Paula Lightfoot Beautiful!! This species was recorded during the Porcupine field trip to Guernsey earlier this year too. Unlike Cadlina pellucida, this species IS in Marine Recorder so if you put it on a Seasearch form it'll go on the NBN Gateway.

David Kipling All you need now is for the Channel Islands to be on NBN Gateway Paula ...

Arne Kuilman Cool nudibranch!

Cynthia D. Trowbridge not a nudibranch :-(

Cynthia D. Trowbridge a sacoglossan...

David Kipling Vegan nudibranch ;)

Antonello Nazareno .... It is present here in southern Mediterranean ... but rather rare ...

David Kipling Contrary to what Dawn Watson thinks, I do not have a supply of model nudibranchs that I take with me on dives ;) These are from the National Museum here in Wales, made of Fimo I think!

Christian Skauge I have a kit like this, bought on eBay from Japan :-)

João Pedro Silva My wife makes bijoux with Fimo professionally and I've been trying (for ages!) to convince her to do these models with the portuguese species.

Christian Skauge http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1550708580196&set=a.1157771997027.24269.1609584836&type=3&theater

João Pedro Silva Hurrah! I've shown my wife these models and she asked me to pick 6 species for her to make until June :)

Bernard Picton Tell your wife it's a very noble tradition. These glass models were traded widely and many museums still have some. There was a conference about them in recent years in Dublin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_and_Rudolf_Blaschka

Bernard Picton Christian Skauge, for your contact who wanted Glaucus, NM Wales have a Blaschka one!! http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/en/rhagor/galleries/blaschka/

Christian Skauge Do you have dates for June? Been away a few days (Nudibranch Safari, of course!) and haven't paid much attn to FB...

Bernard Picton Or July?

Christian Skauge Fantastic glass figures - I want one!!

Bernard Picton I doubt if you can afford one, I'm afraid. But if you visit Ireland we could try and get to see the ones in National Museum of Ireland. It was closed to the public, but I have contacts. http://www.ucd.ie/blaschka/

Christian Skauge Will do! I think I'll have to steal one, they seem a bit pricy... :-D

Bernard Picton Did you find a price?

João Pedro Silva Sorry, I don't have dates yet :(

João Pedro Silva I've sent a list of 8 species so she can pick 6: Flabellina babai, Hypselodoris villafranca (these are so common they are a "must"), Armina maculata, Marionia blainvillea, Diaphorodoris luteocincta, Dondice banyulensis, Chromodoris luteorosea, Cadlina pellucida. If these turn out ok I'm counting on you to convince her to the all the NE Atlantic species :)

David Kipling Okenia elegans of course!

Christian Skauge @ Bernard: Found no price, just a wild guess :-)

Gonçalo Calado Same with algarvian typical pastery http://www.imagesofportugal.net/media/471cd934-bdc1-11e0-acb5-57e8dc34769b-algarve-s-traditional-pastry-portugal

João Pedro Silva I usually describe Platydoris argo as a pancake orange underneath with sugar on top.

Bernard Picton Now don't go there... Seasearch keep inventing common names for things, Amphilectus fucorum = shredded carrot sponge - trouble is they are always food related...

Bernard Picton Pentapora was widely called ross coral (I think a typo for rose) but they invented potato crisp bryozoan....

Christian Skauge hahaha I always get hungry when finding a sea sausage :)

João Pedro Silva All the nudibranchs here in Portugal share on common name: "nudibranch". Except for Peltodoris atromaculata: "vaquinha suíça" (literally, "swiss cow", a dairy Holstein breed cow).

Becky Hitchin I have some plastic nudibranchs from Japan :)

David Kipling I have to say that I am disappointed that the National Museum (which tends to focus on welsh natural history) has a display of purely tropical nudibranchs! I think we should get João Pedro Silva's wife to make an extravagant set of NE Atlantic nudibranchs to replace them, to show that the Atlantic has species that can easily rival those in the tropics.

David Kipling Although we might have to make the Dotos a bit larger-than-life!

João Pedro Silva Unlike C. laevis, Cadlina pellucida is very common along the portuguese coast, sometimes in very high densities locally.
