Jane Wilkinson Can anyone ID this for me. Sorry it's not a very good picture but I couldn't get anywhere near it. Seen in Loch Ailort in about 5-8m. I'm puzzled by the bit sticking out at the top, the only thing I can find with anything like that is a Thor's Scaldfish.
Marco Faasse Yes, I think it's
Arnoglossus thori. More photos: http://doris.ffessm.fr/fiche.asp?varpositionf=83&sousgroupe_numero=&fiche_numero=554&origine=groupe&fiche_etat=4

Marco Faasse Sorry, I cannot make the link working. Maybe it's necessary to login on the site.

Jane Wilkinson Yep that works, thank you for your confirmation of what it is.
Frances Dipper Yes this is Thor's scaldfish. See P.144 of my book Marine Fishes of Wales
Jane Wilkinson Hi Frances, I have your book here and it was from there that I made my tentative ID suggestion, the drawings were really helpful. It's just not a good photo and at the time I thought it might be a topknot as I hadn't even spotted the bit sticking out until I checked the pictures later.
Frances Dipper OH good, I'm very pleased. Interestingly Paul Kay says he never or rarely sees the other scaldfish when he's diving.
João Pedro Silva Gone fishing. Meanwhile this has been identified as
Arnoglossus thori.
From yesterday's dive in Sesimbra, Portugal.
